What goes behind the tile in a shower?

A tile shower is built in layers: a sloped pan, a certified Schluter or Wedi waterproofing membrane running up the walls and across every seam, reinforced corners and the drain flange, then mortar and tile. The membrane is what keeps water out of your framing, and it should be flood-tested before any tile goes on.

You will never see 5 of these 6 layers again once the shower is finished, which is exactly why they are the layers worth asking every contractor about.

LAYER 01

The subfloor and framing

Everything above this fails if the floor moves. We check deflection, sister joists where the span calls for it, and correct any rot demolition uncovers before a single new material goes down. On a curbless build, the slope starts here rather than in the mortar.

LAYER 02

The sloped pan

Water moves where the pitch sends it. The pan gets built to a consistent fall toward the drain across the whole floor, which is what keeps water from standing in a corner for the next 20 years and working at the grout.

LAYER 03

The certified membrane

A Schluter or Wedi system runs up every wall and across the pan as a continuous barrier. Shawn holds factory certification in both, which means the assembly matches what the manufacturer warrants rather than an approximation of it.

LAYER 04

Seams, corners, and the drain flange

Showers fail at transitions, not in the middle of a wall. Inside corners, the curb, the niche, and the bond between membrane and drain flange all get banded and sealed to spec, because those few square inches carry most of the risk in the whole assembly.

LAYER 05

The flood test

We plug the drain, fill the pan, and let it sit before any tile goes on. A leak found on this day costs an afternoon, and the same leak found 3 years later costs a rebuilt shower and a repaired ceiling below. Ask every contractor you interview whether they flood-test, and listen carefully to the answer.

LAYER 06

Mortar, tile, and glass

The part you actually see gets set against a laser line with full mortar coverage behind every piece, so large-format tile sits flat and nothing sounds hollow underfoot. Glass gets templated after the tile is set, which is the only way panels fit finished walls exactly.
